Moving is stressful; there isn’t much doubt about that. To successfully execute a move, you need to consider everything from preparation and planning to moving day itself. Now, imagine being a senior transitioning into an assisted-living facility. While the change is an exciting one full of opportunities, the move will most likely require downsizing. It can also be an emotional task for your or the senior in your life.

Victoria Landing, located in gorgeous Melbourne, Florida, offers waterfront assisted living like no other. We know a move can be hard enough on its own. Here are some tips for downsizing that will hopefully get you headed in the right direction.

Create a Checklist and Timeline

As with any move, having a plan will be a tremendous asset. You will need to change your address, cancel utilities, hire a moving company, and so much more. The sooner you start, the better. Here is a great checklist created just for seniors moving into an assisted living facility.

Once you know what you will need to take care of, you can determine a timeline, which will free you from the stress of last-minute decisions.

Review Dimensions

Now that you have your checklist in hand and a timeline, you will need to determine how much space you will have in your new home. Victoria Landing offers four different floor plans for our residents, along with our memory care community called The Boardwalk.

Naturally, the amount of space you have will determine what you can bring with you. The next step is choosing what comes and what goes.

Decide What to Bring

For many, this is the hardest step. You’ve created a life where you are full of memories. We know letting go of your belongings can be tremendously hard, which is why we recommend that you approach this step slowly. Take all the time you need to sit with your things and say good-bye to what isn’t coming with you.

Now is a great time to call in some help. Make three separate piles: keep, give away, and sell. Take the time you need to place items in the appropriate pile. Remember, it’s perfectly normal to experience emotions during this time. Sit with them. Feel and process those feelings.
